SUSPICIOUS LETTERS & PACKAGES

If you receive a suspicious letter or package what should you do?

1. Handle with care. Do not shake or bump. 2. Isolate and look for indicators. 3. Do not open, smell, or taste. 4. Treat it as suspect. Call 911

A suspicious letter or package may have one or more of the following indicators:

1. No Return Address 
2. Restrictive Markings (e.g.., PERSONAL, SPECIAL DELIVERY) 
3. Possibly Mailed from a Foreign Country 
4. Excessive Postage 
5. Misspelled Words 
6. Addressed to Title Only or Incorrect Title 
7. Badly Typed or Written 
8. Protruding Wires 
9. Lopsided or Uneven 
10. Ridged or Bulky 
11. Strange Odor 
12. Oily Stains 
13. Discolorations 
14. Crystallization on Wrapper 
15. Excessive Tape or String

If letter or package is open and/or a possible threat is identified:

FOR A BOMB THREAT: Evacuate immediately Call 911 (Police) Contact Local FBI (In the LA area the FBI number is 310-477-6565)

FOR A RADIOLOGICAL THREAT: Limit Exposure - DO NOT HANDLE Distance (Evacuate Area) Shield Yourself from Object Call 911 (Police) Contact Local FBI (In the LA area the FBI number is 310-477-6565)

FOR A BIOLOGICAL or CHEMICAL THREAT (Such as Anthrax): Isolate - DO NOT HANDLE Call 911 (Police) Wash Your Hands with Soap and Warm Water Contact Local FBI (In the LA area the FBI number is 310-477-6565)
