Lockheed Federal Credit Union employees give time, money to nonprofit For The
Troops
Lockheed
Federal Credit Union (LFCU) employees assembled 219 care packages for U.S.
troops in Afghanistan and Iraq with local nonprofit organization For The Troops
(FTT) on May 20. The credit union collected goods for care packages from May 3
to May 18 at the branch – 153 E. Cochran St. in Simi Valley, and those goods
were included in care packages.
Lockheed
Federal Credit Union volunteers assembled 219 care packages May 20 at nonprofit
organization For The Troops in Simi Valley.
“We’re
grateful to work with For The Troops again,” Branch Sales Manager Ron
Schneidereit said. “Our campaigns to date have been successful with help from
our employees, members and Simi Valley residents. The credit union employees are
especially excited to assemble the care packages. It means a lot to us to work
together in Simi Valley and have an effect on the global community.”
Since
2005, For The Troops has shipped more than 21,000 care packages overseas, and
LFCU employees were proud to help increase that number.
“Lockheed
Federal Credit Union’s lasting support has made a difference in our
organization,” For The Troops co-founder Janie Josephson said. “Their open
doors have allowed the community to embrace our mission. The credit union, (its)
employees and members have contributed money and time, and we’re grateful to
receive both.”
Since
2008, LFCU helped assemble 400 packages overseas to troops in Afghanistan and
Iraq with more than 48 volunteer work hours and several hundred items. During
the last year and a half, LFCU Community Stars (a nonprofit foundation) has
contributed more than $20,000 to FTT with the help of LFCU and its employees.

BURBANK FIREFIGHTERS FILL THE BOOT FOR MDA The Burbank Fire Department
held its annual event that raised funds for those
suffering from neuromuscular diseases.
May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
Firefighters from the Burbank Fire Department local 778 once again participated in the annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign which benefits the local chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). An organization dedicated to finding a cure for muscular dystrophy, ALS, as well as other related diseases. Fill the Boot was a three-day event that collects proceeds to benefit MDA’s programs including clinics, summer camps, and funding scientific research.
On May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, Burbank firefighters were stationed throughout the
City of Burbank filling the boot from cars stopped at red lights, asking them
for donations on behalf of Jerry’s Kids and the Muscular Dystrophy
Association by encouraging them to fill their firefighter boots with spare
change. This year the Burbank Firefighters set a new record and raised over
$21,000 for MDA. Firefighters all across the United States participate in
Fill-the-boot programs, last year in California alone, firefighters raised over
$2 million.
The joining of MDA and the International Association of the Firefighters (IAFF)
began in 1952, and MDA became the IAFF’s “charity of choice” shortly
after. The IAFF has since became MDA’s single-largest sponsor, collecting
more than $450 million to benefit MDA.
We would like to express our “Thanks“ to the following restaurants
for offering their support by providing lunch for our Fire Fighters: California
Pizza Kitchen, Chevy’s, Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse, Panda Express and
Sharkey’s.
About MDA
MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat 43 neuromuscular diseases
through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services and far-reaching
professional and public health education. Along with MDA’s funding of
research, MDA maintains about 230 clinics nationwide. MDA’s programs are
funding almost entirely by individual private contributors.

Lockheed Federal Credit Union Takes Lunch to Another Level Employee Volunteers Donate Time to Make Meals for Burbank Temporary Aid Center Clients
Lockheed Federal Credit Union (LFCU) employees know the importance of a good
lunch, and took the time to make 500 lunches for Burbank Temporary Aid Center
clients April 27, 2010. The event was a true community effort with the First United
Methodist Church, 700 N. Glenoaks Blvd., lending its kitchen to LFCU to prepare
the lunches. And, local children and adults decorated the lunch bags.
Volunteers from Lockheed Federal Credit Union made 500 lunches for Burbank Temporary Aid Center clients April 27, 2010.
The Burbank-based credit union and its employees have given more than $37,000 and 150 volunteer hours to BTAC since 2008.
“Lockheed
Federal Credit Union has really come through for us in the last few years,”
BTAC Executive Director Barbara Howell said. “Last year, they contributed
money toward sack lunches for our clients who are homeless. This year, they
wanted to collect lunch items and make the lunches themselves. We are so
grateful for their dedication – they make a difference to us and those we
serve.”
Burbank
artist Randall Williams encouraged his students to exercise their artistic
skills. He teaches kindergarteners and elementary students at Ben Franklin
Elementary School, and adults at the Joslyn Center in Burbank. “When some of
the artists realized the reason for the illustrations on the bag, it didn’t
matter the age,” Williams said. “Whether (age) 5 or 95, they gave their best
effort because they knew it was a community service.”
Principal
Tom Kissinger at Providencia Elementary School also worked with the teachers and
students to illustrate the lunch bags. “We’re glad to engage our students in
this project; our kids really enjoy the experience of doing something for
others,” Kissinger said. “And, we’re fortunate to partner with
organizations like Lockheed (Federal Credit Union) that know the importance of
community.”
Through
its Volunteer Time Off program, LFCU employees donated more than 25 man hours to
assemble the lunches. The credit union also hosted a food drive with its
employees so that they could make lunches with ingredients supplied by its
staff.
Established
in 2008, LFCU’s Volunteer Time Off Program allows employees to receive company
paid time off to volunteer in the community. Each employee can volunteer during
the work day a maximum of eight hours per year. Throughout the year, LFCU
employees organize volunteer opportunities to support LFCU Community Stars’
nonprofit partners.
“Lockheed
Federal Credit Union is proud to continue its strong support of the Burbank
Temporary Aid Center, with donations of food, supplies and staff assistance,”
said Dave Styler, President and CEO. “It’s gratifying to partner with an
organization that shares our values and community spirit.”
Burbank
Temporary Aid Center received more than $37,000 in donations from LFCU and its
employees since 2008. LFCU will continue its support of BTAC in 2010 with its
contributions and volunteerism programs.
LFCU

LFCU continues to support the community through its nonprofit foundation, LFCU
Community Stars. In 2007, LFCU employees developed LFCU Community Stars
Foundation to support local charities through financial donations and
volunteerism. LFCU employees make contributions to sponsored charities through
payroll deductions and special fund-raising events.
LFCU
also offers a donation-matching program for employees who make contributions
through payroll deduction. The four charities that were selected by the
foundation’s board to be supported in 2010 are Burbank Temporary Aid Center,
For The Troops, Penny Lane Centers and the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center.

Burbank
Celebrates the 20th Anniversary of its Backyard Composting Program
(Burbank,
January 2010). The Burbank Recycle Center is celebrating the
20thAnniversary of its Backyard Composting Program with more compost workshops
than ever before. Since 1990 an estimated 10,000 residents have attended classes
and over 5,000 compost bins have been distributed. The program emphasizes the
benefits of working with nature to make the highest and best use of leaves,
grass and food scraps. As a result, each year, 1,800 tons of organic materials
in Burbank neighborhoods are quietly transformed into a rich soil amendment.
Composting
food scraps , mulching leaf clippings and "grasscycling" (leaving
grass clippings on the lawn) are powerful landscaping techniques that save
energy, water, road congestion, air pollutants and help to reduce chemical
exposure. The new paradigm being recognized is to keep most yard clippings on
site and let nature do the work. This technique also lends itself to supporting Burbank's
goal of Zero Waste by 2040.
To
help more residents get started Burbank Recycling Center has organized 11 free
compost workshops throughout the community and are offering free compost bins to
all those who attend. Interested residents can find the dates and locations of
the workshops on the City's calendar at www.burbankusa.com
and can RSVP by calling (818) 238-3900. Workshop's may also be listed
in the Community Events section
of Burbank Wire.
Warm
clothes are recommended as all workshops will be held out doors.
We

specialty-food items! Donations to BTAC can be delivered weekdays between 9:00am and 5:00pm to the rear alley loading dock door of the facility at 1304 W. Burbank Blvd. Receipts are provided to every donor, and volunteers will be available to help unload any donations. http://www.thebtac.org
