Keeping identities secure is the "special challenge" for the Department of Homeland Security, and lies at the core of its efforts to protect the nation.
As an Ambassador for the National Notary Association we feel the same.
The ability to authenticate people's identity has declined significantly with " very serious consequences."
Secretary Michael Chertoff said that America's ability to authenticate peoples identity has declined significantly with " very serious consequences."
He pointed to the recent indictment of 11 people who stole more than 40 million credit and debit card numbers from major retail chains. He said that "everything we do-from getting a job, buying a home, paying taxes-depends on our identities."
As Notaries and certified Trusted Enrollment Agents, we feel as does Secretary Chertoff that the challenge of identity is not the government's alone. We as individuals have a very important role to play. The private sector needs to come up with systems and standards that "truly verifies and validates identity.
