Beggars Can't Be Choosers
Why agonize over money during your most difficult time?
One of the biggest problems you will have when you need assistance with the
activities of your daily life is a sense of powerlessness. Seniors often
feel that they have been "dumped" by their family--placed in a home
not of their own choosing. Your family will try to balance their desire to
find you a nice place to live--one that provides maximum independence for you
consistent with your health and need for assistance--with their desire to make
your resources last as long as possible so that you won't go broke in the
process and end up on Medi-Cal (welfare). If you end up being taken to a
home that is not your home of choice, you may feel "dumped".
A long-term care insurance policy can help you avoid that sense of powerlessness--avoid
the feeling of being "dumped". When such a policy is tailored to your own
needs--your health requirements and your resources--you can be the one calling
the shots, directing your own care. For example, if you move into an
assisted living facility and you then find that you don't like it, you can move
out and into a place more suitable to you. The great thing will be that
you may not need you family's permission if you have the money and can do what
you want.
It will be hard enough not being able to do everything for yourself like you
were used to. Why agonize over a lack of money during your most difficult
times? And if you can maintain your ability to choose, the services that
you receive will be so much better, and the people providing those services will
be more competent and friendlier to you. People will know that if they don't
treat you like the good customer that you are, you may choose to go somewhere
else. The old adage that "beggars
can't be choosers" is even more true when you need physical help. If
you have the money available through a LTCi policy, you will certainly not be a
beggar--you will be a chooser. The options available to you in the future depend upon the choices about money that
you make today.
