BURBANK MAYOR PROCLAIMS NOVEMBER “BTAC MONTH”

BURBANK, Calif. (November 2008) -- Burbank Mayor Dave Golonski is declaring November “Burbank Temporary Aid Center Month” in Burbank. The proclamation is a highlight of a variety of fundraising, food collection and related efforts through November, an ambitious series of events giving friends, neighbors and local businesses opportunities to join BTAC in helping the working poor, needy seniors and the homeless of Burbank.

“We’ve been serving Burbank for thirty five years, but the organization has never seen requests for help skyrocket the way they have this year,” said BTAC Executive Director Barbara Howell.

“We’re obviously building up for the holidays, which are busy for us every year,” said Michael Walbrecht, Chair of BTAC’s Board of Directors. “But the current economy has had a severe impact on so many families and individuals in Burbank, the numbers are unprecedented.”

Howell said BTAC has seen a 60-percent increase in the number of requests for groceries from BTAC’s Food Pantry over the last 18 months.

“Our clients today run the gamut from the homeless, to the newly unemployed in the insurance, high-tech, and entertainment industries, and every service job you can imagine,” Howell said. “Clients also include the working poor, people who have a job but who are still forced to choose between rent, or health care, or groceries.”

Following is a list of several “BTAC Month” events and information on them:

Also important at this time of year is BTAC’s “Santa’s Room” program, an effort to see that children who would otherwise receive little or nothing receive gifts for Christmas. “Especially important is our toy drive is our effort to collect gifts for teenagers,” Howell said. “So we are truly grateful for gift cards, small electronics, and so forth.” Potential Santa’s Room gift donors are urged to attend any one of the events listed, or to contact BTAC directly for more information at (818) 848-2822, ext 110.
