“We’re
grateful to work with For The Troops again,” Branch Sales Manager Ron

BURBANK FIREFIGHTERS FILL THE BOOT FOR MDA The Burbank Fire Department
held its annual event that raised funds for those
suffering from neuromuscular diseases.
May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
Firefighters from the Burbank Fire Department local 778 once again participated in the annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign which benefits the local chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). An organization dedicated to finding a cure for muscular dystrophy, ALS, as well as other related diseases. Fill the Boot was a three-day event that collects proceeds to benefit MDA’s programs including clinics, summer camps, and funding scientific research.
On May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, Burbank firefighters were stationed throughout the
City of Burbank filling the boot from cars stopped at red lights, asking them
for donations on behalf of Jerry’s Kids and the Muscular Dystrophy
Association by encouraging them to fill their firefighter boots with spare
change. This year the Burbank Firefighters set a new record and raised over
$21,000 for MDA. Firefighters all across the United States participate in
Fill-the-boot programs, last year in California alone, firefighters raised over
$2 million.
The joining of MDA and the International Association of the Firefighters (IAFF)
began in 1952, and MDA became the IAFF’s “charity of choice” shortly
after. The IAFF has since became MDA’s single-largest sponsor, collecting
more than $450 million to benefit MDA.
We would like to express our “Thanks“ to the following restaurants
for offering their support by providing lunch for our Fire Fighters: California
Pizza Kitchen, Chevy’s, Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse, Panda Express and
Sharkey’s.
About MDA
MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat 43 neuromuscular diseases
through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services and far-reaching
professional and public health education. Along with MDA’s funding of
research, MDA maintains about 230 clinics nationwide. MDA’s programs are
funding almost entirely by individual private contributors.

Lockheed Federal Credit Union Takes Lunch to Another Level Employee Volunteers Donate Time to Make Meals for Burbank Temporary Aid Center Clients
Lockheed Federal Credit Union (LFCU) employees know the importance of a good
lunch, and took the time to make 500 lunches for Burbank Temporary Aid Center
clients April 27, 2010. The event was a true community effort with the First United
Methodist Church, 700 N. Glenoaks Blvd., lending its kitchen to LFCU to prepare
the lunches. And, local children and adults decorated the lunch bags.
Volunteers from Lockheed Federal Credit Union made 500 lunches for Burbank Temporary Aid Center clients April 27, 2010.
The Burbank-based credit union and its employees have given more than $37,000 and 150 volunteer hours to BTAC since 2008.
“Lockheed
Federal Credit Union has really come through for us in the last few years,”
BTAC Executive Director Barbara Howell said. “Last year, they contributed
money toward sack lunches for our clients who are homeless. This year, they
wanted to collect lunch items and make the lunches themselves. We are so
grateful for their dedication – they make a difference to us and those we
serve.”
Burbank
artist Randall Williams encouraged his students to exercise their artistic
skills. He teaches kindergarteners and elementary students at Ben Franklin
Elementary School, and adults at the Joslyn Center in Burbank. “When some of
the artists realized the reason for the illustrations on the bag, it didn’t
matter the age,” Williams said. “Whether (age) 5 or 95, they gave their best
effort because they knew it was a community service.”
Principal
Tom Kissinger at Providencia Elementary School also worked with the teachers and
students to illustrate the lunch bags. “We’re glad to engage our students in
this project; our kids really enjoy the experience of doing something for
others,” Kissinger said. “And, we’re fortunate to partner with
organizations like Lockheed (Federal Credit Union) that know the importance of
community.”
Through
its Volunteer Time Off program, LFCU employees donated more than 25 man hours to
assemble the lunches. The credit union also hosted a food drive with its
employees so that they could make lunches with ingredients supplied by its
staff.
Established
in 2008, LFCU’s Volunteer Time Off Program allows employees to receive company
paid time off to volunteer in the community. Each employee can volunteer during
the work day a maximum of eight hours per year. Throughout the year, LFCU
employees organize volunteer opportunities to support LFCU Community Stars’
nonprofit partners.
“Lockheed
Federal Credit Union is proud to continue its strong support of the Burbank
Temporary Aid Center, with donations of food, supplies and staff assistance,”
said Dave Styler, President and CEO. “It’s gratifying to partner with an
organization that shares our values and community spirit.”
Burbank
Temporary Aid Center received more than $37,000 in donations from LFCU and its
employees since 2008. LFCU will continue its support of BTAC in 2010 with its
contributions and volunteerism programs.
LFCU
in the Community
LFCU continues to support the community through its nonprofit foundation, LFCU
Community Stars. In 2007, LFCU employees developed LFCU Community Stars
Foundation to support local charities through financial donations and
volunteerism. LFCU employees make contributions to sponsored charities through
payroll deductions and special fund-raising events.
LFCU
also offers a donation-matching program for employees who make contributions
through payroll deduction. The four charities that were selected by the
foundation’s board to be supported in 2010 are Burbank Temporary Aid Center,
For The Troops, Penny Lane Centers and the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center.

Burbank
Celebrates the 20th Anniversary of its Backyard Composting Program
(Burbank,
January 2010). The Burbank Recycle Center is celebrating the
20thAnniversary of its Backyard Composting Program with more compost workshops
than ever before. Since 1990 an estimated 10,000 residents have attended classes
and over 5,000 compost bins have been distributed. The program emphasizes the
benefits of working with nature to make the highest and best use of leaves,
grass and food scraps. As a result, each year, 1,800 tons of organic materials
in Burbank neighborhoods are quietly transformed into a rich soil amendment.
Composting
food scraps , mulching leaf clippings and "grasscycling" (leaving
grass clippings on the lawn) are powerful landscaping techniques that save
energy, water, road congestion, air pollutants and help to reduce chemical
exposure. The new paradigm being recognized is to keep most yard clippings on
site and let nature do the work. This technique also lends itself to supporting Burbank's
goal of Zero Waste by 2040.
To
help more residents get started Burbank Recycling Center has organized 11 free
compost workshops throughout the community and are offering free compost bins to
all those who attend. Interested residents can find the dates and locations of
the workshops on the City's calendar at www.burbankusa.com
and can RSVP by calling (818) 238-3900. Workshop's may also be listed

Local Church to show Big Screen Motion Picture with 5.1 Theatrical Sound!
Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ"
In
celebration of the Easter season, the Magnolia Park United Methodist Church,
located at 2828 W. Magnolia Blvd., in Burbank will be presenting the much talked
about Mel Gibson film, "The Passion of the Christ" complete with 5.1
theatrical "SurroundSound" to bring out the best of the original
DTS/Dolby Digital, SDDS Sound as intended for the audience to capture the vivid
depiction of the last 12 hours of Christ. You will enjoy our 10ft X 18ft
theatrical screen, which will enhance the presentation as film maker Mel Gibson
originally intended.
The
120 minute color film, depicting history, is complimented with the speaking of
English, Latin and Hebrew. The controversial film, produced and directed by
popular actor Mel Gibson, won critic acclaim as the best depiction of the
suffering of Christ before he were crucified on the cross.
Rated
"R" for the sequences of graphic violence surrounding the last hours
of Jesus on earth. The dynamics of Blu-Ray Video, of great quality as projected
on a large screen, with the dynamic sound created by a 5.1 theatrical system,
will set this viewing aside as being very close to the original opening week,
where it held screen in the number one position for a substantial period of
time.
Producer/Director
Gibson tried to garner Hollywood to produce the suffering of Christ and showing
his "Passion" for man kind in the sacrifice of his life under extreme
circumstances. Finding no major studio who would touch his project, Mel Gibson
funded and directed the film himself. The select few who responded, wanted to do
it in their way and not that of the writers or producer. Gibson declined offers
and would not allow his film to be captured and destroyed in the business as
usual Hollywood style, trying to make a politically correct statement.
In
the film, the mother of Jesus, Mary is depicted in her torture as she watches
her son suffer under extreme circumstances. The performance of Maia Morgenstern,
as Mary, delivers the great emotional pain as she watches her son Jesus, played
by James Caviezel, being whipped and marched through the streets, to his place
of sacrifice. A teardrop falls from heaven.
The
preceding scenes artistically show Jesus as a normal boy, in flashbacks to build
a bond between the most important person in history and the audience. As a film,
The Passion of the Christ is excellent; as a religious experience it is even
better.
The
harsh reality of the well known story comes home, especially when witnessed as
it will be delivered at this viewing of this 3 Oscar Nominated film, Hollywood
said could not be made!
This
showing is free to the public at The Magnolia Park United Methodist Church, 2828
W. Magnolia Blvd., Burbank on Thursday, April 1st, beginning at 7:00PM.

“Lockheed
Federal Credit Union employees strongly believe in giving back to our community
through dollars and time,” President and CEO Dave Styler said. “We hope our
efforts help strengthen the community and the very deserving local nonprofits
that serve the area.”
As
well as giving dollars, through its Volunteer-Time-Off Program, more than 150
employees donated time to these charities since the program’s inception in
2008.
LFCU
hosted 11 volunteer opportunities for employee participation, one of which was
the company’s annual project, Partner to Paint.
Established
in 2008, LFCU’s Volunteer-Time-Off Program allows employees to receive company
paid time off to volunteer in the community. Each employee can receive up to
eight hours per year to volunteer during the work day. LFCU will again support
these charities in 2010.
LFCU
in the Community
LFCU continues to support the community through its nonprofit foundation, LFCU
Community Stars. In 2007, LFCU employees developed LFCU Community Stars
Foundation to support local charities through financial donations and
volunteerism. LFCU employees make contributions to sponsored charities through
payroll deductions and special fund-raising events. Employees are able to
volunteer during their normal work hours.
LFCU
also offers a donation-matching program for employees who make contributions
through payroll deduction. Additionally, LFCU Community Stars launches programs
aimed at the 100,000 members of LFCU in an effort to increase the foundation’s
ability to help charities in the communities served by LFCU. Every year, LFCU
Community Stars foundation board selects charities to support, with decisions
being made by the foundation’s board comprised of employees.

This technique also lends itself to supporting
Burbanks goal of Zero Waste by 2040.
To
help more residents get started Burbank Recycling Center has organized 11 free
compost workshops throughout the community and are offering free compost bins to
all those who attend. Interested residents can find the dates and locations of
the workshops on the City's calendar at www.burbankusa.com
and can RSVP by calling (818) 238-3900.
Warm
clothes are recommended as all workshops will be held out doors.

resident, and a local attorney has been practicing law in his own firm for
thirty-two years. Bob's emphasis is in Estate Planning, Trusts, Probate and

(1989-90) and (1992-93); Burbank City Council Member (1984-1995); President of
the Burbank Board of Education and School Board member (1978-1984); and a member

raising $200,000 to support our financial scholarship program."
"I
am honored to be asked to chair the campaign," said Bowne. "I've
worked with the YMCA in the past, my son Ryan currently serves as a Board Member
and I see every day how the Y works so hard to fulfill its mission. With the
help of CEO, JC Holt and his outstanding staff, I look forward to a successful
campaign." The Burbank Community YMCA Annual Support campaign officially

“B-100,” Leading Burbank into the Next 100 Years
In
recognition of the City of Burbank’s Centennial in 2011, the 2010 Class of
Leadership Burbank has committed to restoring an important icon: The
mountainside “B” that has adorned the city since the 1920’s.
“With
the “B” dating back over 80 years, it’s long overdue for a face-lift. The
“B” is to Burbank what the ‘Hollywood’ sign is to Hollywood,” Burbank
Mayor Gary Bric said. “I think it's a very worthwhile project for the
Leadership Burbank Class of 2010.”
The
site has been prepped and cleared with the help of volunteers so that 2 tons of
materials, including white vinyl panels, rebar, weed cloth and stakes can be
airlifted to the site.
“As
a lifelong resident of this community, and having recently retired from my
position as City Manager, I am very excited about the restoration and
improvement of Burbank's “B,”” said Leadership Burbank facilitator Mary
Alvord “With the City's Centennial just a year away, this project will raise
the community's awareness and build anticipation for the celebrations and events
to come.”
Volunteers
are welcome to join the class and assist in renovating the “B” on April 24
and 25. Volunteers are needed to assist with registration, general project
support and aid in the actual construction of the “B.” To volunteer or for
details regarding hike information, please contact Jessica Castro at (818)

addition to being created and built in this country, it relies on
power that is 100% derived from U.S. sources, thereby reducing
