Lions International Youth
Exchange Program
By Marva Murphy
Students participating in the Lions International Youth Exchange
Program (YEP) become "Passports to World Peace and
Understanding" following their visits to other countries. Those 17
-21 years of age are eligible to take part in the program designed to
enable the students to gain an awareness about the customs, history and
culture of others around the world. The friendships, memories and
experiences allow the YEP participant to return home with the ability to
foster harmony and understanding towards goodwill in international
relations.
The exchange program takes place for six weeks during the summer
months, and students stay usually with a host Lions Club family/families
in their country of choice. Last year, exchange slots were available for
18 countries including but not limited to Japan, Peru, Australia, Belgium,
France, Italy and Costa Rica.
Each student is responsible for their own fee which is approximately
$2,000 or less and includes the airfare from LAX, travel and medical
insurance and Lions Clubs incidentals.
Living expenses, housing, food and entertainment during the six weeks
are provided free of charge by the host family.
The Burbank Noon Lions Club is offering $250 towards the YEP fee for a
qualifying student. The balance may be provided by the student, family
members or as a result of a fundraising effort on the part of the YEP
applicant. Scholarships may be available through the YEP program.
