When Margy McAtee, (2nd from Left)
a realtor with Coldwell Banker in Burbank, read an
article about "Sight Night' in a local
newspaper, she concluded that it would be a good
project for her to do with the two granddaughters.
Researching a bit more, she found that it was a
Lions Club International project to promote the
collection of used eyeglasses in local communities
which are then distributed to the poor in third
world countries via volunteer clinic trips. Sight
Night's purpose is to take advantage of the
Halloween Night, and instead of collecting the
traditional candy, project volunteers collect used
glasses. McAtee set about notifying friends, family
and co-workers about the project and connected with
the local Lions Club, Burbank Noon. Her youngest
granddaughter Jasmine, a member of Girl Scout Troop
#1406, participated representing her Girl Scout
troop.
McAtee, shown here with Denis Bolen (Left) is
handing over the more than 100 glasses collected, to
Burbank Noon Lions President Mimi Panarisi and Lions
Past District Governor John Panarisi (Right). McAtee
continues to promote the collection of used
eyeglasses at the Coldwell Banker offices on 1033 N.
Hollywood Way, and has discovered that the glasses
in her collection box keep magically increasing. She
is very happy to continue with her collection
efforts beyond Sight Night, knowing there is an
ongoing need to provide glasses for the poor around
the world. |
