John Muir Neighborhood Landmark
Destroyed
The first visible
thing the new owners of the Hillside
Charmer at the corner of Kenneth and Amherst did was to cut down, remove
and destroy the nearly sixty-year old pine tree and virtually every other piece
of vegetation on the property. Once again the neighborhood's namesake
was sadly proved correct:
"God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease,
avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from
fools." ---John Muir
A Senior Vice President of a major Burbank real estate firm not involved in
this particular transaction commented, "Private property rights …an owner
can do what they want to their property within the city codes …is a pretty
cherished right."
Unwillingness of people (and unwillingness of so-called
"professionals" and advisors working in various fields to responsibly
educate their clients) to respect Natural Laws will eventually lead to more restrictive
civil laws and bureaucracies to administer them. In the meantime more and
more of our nature and history goes unpreserved, replaced by individual whims
and egos.

John Muir
Of all the extraordinary men and women that have made our nation great, one
stands above all others for his dedication to preserving its unequaled natural
beauty: John Muir. founder of The Sierra Club. What makes Muir so special is his
belief that we can live in harmony with Creation if we take simple steps to
prevent despoiling it.
