Relay For
Life of Burbank
Families and Friends of Burbank
Bring HOPE to
Neighbors Facing Cancer
Saturday and Sunday, June 27th
and 28th
Burbank (April 2009) Relay For Life is
the American Cancer Societys signature activity. It offers everyone in a community
an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a
local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or
path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the
event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length.
Teams of people from all walks of life have fun while raising much-needed funds to
fight cancer and raise awareness of cancer prevention and treatment.
Relay For Life is a life-changing event that brings Burbank together to:
- Celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer. The strength of survivors inspires
others to continue to fight.
- Remember loved ones lost to the disease. At Relay, people who have walked alongside
people battling cancer can grieve and find healing.
- Fight Back. We Relay because we have been touched by cancer and desperately want to put
an end to the disease.
This year only, our Burbank Relay event will offer the unique
opportunity to participate in a landmark study, the Cancer Prevention Study-3
(CPS-3). The American Cancer Society will be enrolling people into CPS-3, a
long-term study that will help researchers better identify the lifestyle, environmental,
and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. Please spread the word and visit
the Cancer Prevention Study-3 website for more
information about how to participate in research today for a cancer free tomorrow!

This will be the first of many displays of the color purple throughout Burbank in the
coming weeks culminating in "Paint the Town Purple" on May 1st. The Bob Hope
Airport will also participate on May 1st by highlighting the tower with purple light
again.
"The tower will be a bright purple beacon of hope and will honor those who have
battled cancer," said Lucy Burghdorf, Community Relations Manager for the Bob Hope
Airport. "The Airport is very pleased to support this community campaign," she
added.
It was in 1985 when one man made a difference in the fight against cancer by running 83
miles in 24 hours. Now 3.5 million Americans follow in his footsteps by participating in
the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
Relay For Life of Burbank is held every year as a way to celebrate loved ones who have
battled cancer, remember those lost and to come together to fight back against the
disease.
Relay For Life of Burbank benefits the American Cancer Society in the local community.
Funds raised at Relay For Life will enable the American Cancer Society to support local
services and resources for cancer patients and their families. Funds also support critical
cancer research and community education programs designed to teach people how to reduce
their risk of developing cancer.
Since its inception in 1985, Relay For Life has grown into an international movement to
end cancer, with events taking place in 5,000 communities in the U.S. and in 19 other
countries. To get involved in Burbank's Relay For Life event and find out how you
can get involved, please call 818-624-8685 or visit www.RelayForLife.org/burbankca.
