The Burbank Public Library is partnering with the Huntington Library to
present The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts. The Huntington
was awarded a grant to host a Big Read celebration of Jack London's The Call
of the Wild in order to promote the sheer enjoyment of reading and reach out
to nonreaders and readers at risk. The Burbank Public Library will present a series of
special programs starting with acclaimed actor Michael Oakes' powerful portrayal of Jack

Erika Koss, Literature Specialist for the National Endowment for the Arts, will discuss
Jack London within the context of other California writers such as John Steinbeck and
Robinson Jeffers. This lecture will be held at the Buena Vista Branch Library on Thursday,
October 9, at 7 PM. 818.238.5620.
Sue Hodson, curator of literary manuscripts for The Huntington, will present an
illustrated lecture on "Jack London, Photographer," on Thursday, October 30, at

The Burbank Central Library will screen two fascinating documentary film: Alaska:
Big America will be shown on Saturday, October 11, at 2 PM and Great
Writers: Jack London will show at 2 PM on Saturday, October 18. All programs

The Burbank Public Library's Coffee & Conversation series features Sisters in
Crime discussing "The Deeper, Darker Side of Mystery Writing" on Saturday,

Family Night at the Library will host magician B.J. Hickman on October 7 at the Buena
Vista Branch and October 9 at the Burbank Central Library and. Both performances begin at

Celebrate National Teen Read Month with a visit from Edgar Allan Poe. "In the Shadow
of the Raven" stars Broadway and film veteran Duffy Hudson as America's most

The Friends of the Burbank Public Library will hold its Fall Used Book Sale, October
27-November 1. Hours are Monday, 5-8 (preview sale for members of the Friends); Tuesday -
Thursday, 10 AM - 8 PM; Friday, 10 AM - 5 PM; and Saturday, 10 AM - 3 PM.
