Kick Off a Summer of Music at the Autry!
Mariachis Lead the Lineup of Fusion, Western, Jazz, Swing, and Salsa
Los Angeles, CA - Immerse yourself in music this summer
at the Autry National Center. Enjoy a multicultural mix of songs and sounds as
we explore history and culture through music. Begin with our Cinco de Mayo
celebrations, featuring the Viva el Cinco! family festival. Mariachis, dancers,
and charros entertain, while our fun activities teach visitors about this
fascinating holiday. Next, on May 17, prepare for an evening of Andean,
Afro-Peruvian, jazz, rock, and classical fusion with Huayucaltia. In June we
kick off our Thursday nights of music by welcoming Western bands for four
evenings of dancing in the plaza. And Sizzling Summer Nights, featuring the best
local salsa bands, returns for nine shows on Thursdays in July and August.

The Cisco Kid. Saturday, May 3, noon–3 pm. The
Autry National Center and Arizona State University present this special
screening of The Cisco Kid (1994). Set in Mexico, The Cisco Kid epitomizes the
conflicts with which contemporary Mexican Americans struggle. Discussion to
follow. Free with museum admission.
Cinco de Mayo Weekend
Mexican Jewelry Show and Sale Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and
4, 10 am–4 pm Shop for unique silver jewelry by renowned jeweler Consuelo
Campos, known for her contemporary romantic designs. Free
Viva el Cinco! Sunday, May 4, 11 am–5 pm The Autry
National Center celebrates the spirit of community at this year’s Viva el
Cinco celebration in honor of Cinco de Mayo. Join us for a festive day with
ballet folklorico, mariachis, and charros. You be the judge in our salsa-tasting
competition. Our cafe will be open for business with its famous taco bar, and
you can learn the secrets of tortilla making through a live demonstration.
Engaging activities for children include making papel picado, and a scavenger
hunt of our Mexican and Mexican American objects in the museum galleries will
not only entertain but enlighten visitors about this important historic event.

A Conversation With Lalo Alcaraz Sunday, May 4, 2–3 pm
What makes funny cartoons seriously persuasive? Find out as we chat with Lalo
Alcaraz, creator of the nationally syndicated comic strip “La Cucaracha.”
This one-of-a-kind cartoonist, satirist, and writer captures the essence of the
country’s changing cultural and political landscape. Join us for an eventful,
thought-provoking, multimedia presentation. Free with museum admission
Let’s Make History at Griffith Park! Tinfoil Frames
Saturday, May 10, 1–2:30 pm Artists from the regions of Guanajuato, Oaxaca,
and Mexico City are known for producing handmade tin pieces. Learn about this
tradition by stamping and etching your own tinfoil frame. Free with museum
admission.
All the Saints Bus Tours Saturday, May 10, 10 am–3 pm
Artist J. Michael Walker guides participants on a tour of Los Angeles and the
All the Saints of the City of the Angels exhibition. Enjoy lunch, and then board
a charter bus for a trip across the city. Reservations are required at least 72

Los Angeles and California: A Fusion of Tastes California

Clásica: Las raices de la musica—The Roots of Music,
featuring Huayucaltia Saturday, May 17, 2–3:30 pm Huayucaltia
(why-you-call-tee-ah) transcends national, cultural, and political barriers
through their indigenous and contemporary instruments. Their style is an
instrumental fusion of Andean, Afro-Peruvian, jazz, rock, and classical
influences. Sponsored by the Pasadena Symphony Association. Free.
Western Music Association California Chapter Monthly Jam
Sunday, May 18, 1–3 pm Preserving the traditional stories and songs of the
romantic days of the Old West and promoting contemporary music of the American
West and the American cowboy—the Western Music Association’s Monthly Jam is
all that and more. Free with museum admission.
Let’s Make History at Griffith Park! Presidential
Silhouette Sunday, May 18, 1–2:30 pm A silhouette is a form of artwork
popular since the 1790s. Show your patriotic side by creating a silhouette of
