About these photos
These photos were taken during Mountain Man Rendezvous. These rendezvous are historical reenactments of the gatherings of mountain
men during the fur trade era of the American West.
Lovers of America’s history get together from all over the country to
create an old-time camp complete with the sights, sounds, smells,
flavors and feelings of the past.
A Mountain Man Rendezvous is like stepping into a time machine to
experience the American West in the 1820s-1840s.
Some of the participants look like they stepped out of a museum, and, in
fact, some of the participants, like Larry of Burbank, California, work
in museums as volunteer docents.
The modern-day rendezvous is tame compared to the original gatherings --
the original ones were a good deal more pungent and violent with
full-scale battles, fights to the death, shootings, knifings, horse
races, robbery, debauchery, and fortunes made and lost in gambling. |
